Handsome 18th Century Oak
Longcase Clock by John Tolson, London c.1720 with
four pillar, eight day movement which chimes the hour
on a bell with an inside count wheel. Separate seconds
hand dial & date calendar aperture. Brass dial with
finely cast mask spandrels, wheatsheaf cross hatching &
silvered chapter ring. Slim oak case with long trunk
door & shaped plinth. A fine example.
Maker : John Tolson (1691-1737) John
Tolson is noted for his fine quality workmanship
& for his similarity in style & standards to
Thomas Tompian. Due to his relatively short working
life examples of his clocks are hard to find. Tolson
became a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers
on 2nd May 1715 & in 1717 he established premises
in Hand Alley, (now New Street) near Bishopsgate Street,
London, where he continued to trade until his death
in 1737.
